Current Reads October-December[ Part 1 ]
Komi Can’t Communicate
A few months back, I made a post saying I’d be talking about my current reads of the month. However, “Komi Can’t Communicate” and “I Am A Cat Barista” arrived months later than anticipated. What else is new, with Covid delaying shipping times and all?
So Komi Can’t Communicate….I can’t say I’m sold. Partially, because I was not a fan of how the manga was broken up. Like skits (think Nichijou). I don’t mind certain mangas that follow this method, however, I’m confused as why it’s used for this story. My opinion is not popular, but I think this manga is overhyped. The comedy is hit or miss, the romance is not compelling enough, and the characters don’t hold my interest. Which hurts, because I wanted to love it…
I Am A Cat Barista
I took a slight risk with this one. I was sold on the plot. People are magically drawn to a mysterious coffee shop run by a cat. But look at the cover, it’s anthropomorphic, it could be great or it can be weird. Luckily it was the former. I’m enchanted by the drinks the barista makes and the message behind each story. It’s just a sweet comic with sweet outcomes. Sometimes you just need something simple like that.
SpyXFamily
I really love that Shonen Jump has been dabbling in new and experimental stories. And one of the best to come out of their exclusive series (on the Jump app) is SpyXFamily. It has a bit of everything, espionage action, family wholesomeness, and bombastic comedy. I can’t stress enough how useful the Shonen App is, if you have it it’s a must-read. (I swear I’m not sponsored I just really love reading a lot of manga for cheap).
Highschool Family
This is another exclusive series on the Shonen Jump App, and one worth reading if only for how ridiculous it is. And I love it. As the title suggests, the main character Kotaro is horrified to find out he will be starting his first year of high school with his whole family, including his cat. That’s right, even the Gato is in school. As you can imagine. there are many hilarious scenarios that occur. I’m also surprised how invested I get with the characters, despite the story plot going off the rails.
